5 Letter Words With the Most Vowels (and When to Use Them in Wordle)

Vowel-heavy words are some of the most famous Wordle openers. ADIEU and AUDIO test four vowels in a single guess, and plenty of players swear by them. But how many five-letter words really have that many vowels, and is a vowel opener actually a good idea? We counted the vowels in every word in our list to find out.

5 letter words with four vowels

No common English five-letter word uses all five vowels. Four is the maximum, and words with four vowels are rare. Among the 2,120 words in our list that are most likely to be Wordle answers, only four have four vowels:

  • ADIEU: A, I, E, U. The best-known vowel opener.
  • AUDIO: A, U, I, O. Tests the O that ADIEU misses.
  • EERIE: E, E, I, E. Only two different vowels, so it is a poor guess.
  • QUEUE: U, E, U, E. Also only two different vowels.

The full word list has a few more, such as AERIE, AIOLI, LOUIE, MIAOU and OORIE, but most are unusual words that Wordle is unlikely to pick as an answer. Some, like AIOLI, are worth knowing as guesses, since Wordle accepts many more words as guesses than it uses as answers.

How many vowels do Wordle answers have?

Here is the count for all likely answers. We counted A, E, I, O and U, and treated Y as a consonant:

5 letter words with the most vowels

Chart: how many vowels 5 letter Wordle answers have. 2 vowels 58.1%, 1 vowel 32.5%, 3 vowels 8.8%

Vowels in the wordLikely answersShareExamples
090.4%CRYPT, LYMPH, NYMPH, PSYCH

21,23158.1%SLATE, CRANE, HOUSE
31878.8%AUDIT, RADIO, OCEAN
440.2%ADIEU, AUDIO, EERIE, QUEUE

The pattern is clear. Nine out of ten answers have only one or two vowels. Words with three or more vowels make up less than one answer in ten. So the typical Wordle answer looks like SLATE or STORM, not like AUDIO.

5 letter words with three vowels

Three-vowel words are more useful than four-vowel ones, because they still leave room for two strong consonants. Good examples from our list of likely answers:

  • With R, S, T, L or N: ARISE, RAISE, ALONE, ATONE, AISLE, ALIEN, ARENA, OCEAN, SAUCE, ROUTE.
  • With other consonants: ABOUT, ABOVE, AUDIT, RADIO, PIANO, VIDEO, MOVIE, HOUSE, MOUSE, VOICE.

Words like ARISE and RAISE are often recommended as openers for a reason: they test three vowels and the very common consonants R and S. You learn about vowels without giving up the consonants that appear in most answers.

Is a vowel opener a good idea?

It depends on what you want from your first guess. Here is the trade-off:

  • The upside: almost every answer has at least one of A, E, I, O, U. A guess like ADIEU will very often turn up a yellow or green, and you will know which vowels to build around.
  • The downside: ADIEU tests only one consonant, D, which is not even a top-ten letter. Most answers have two or three consonants, so your second guess has to do all the consonant work.

In our letter counts, the most common consonants in likely answers are R, T, S, L and N. A balanced opener such as SLATE or CRANE tests two vowels and three of those consonants in one go, which usually finds more of the answer’s letters than ADIEU does. You can see the full ranking in our guide to the best Wordle starting words and the breakdown of the most common letters in 5 letter words.

So vowel openers are not wrong, but they work best as part of a two-word plan.

How to use vowel words well

  1. Pair a vowel opener with a consonant word. If you open with ADIEU, follow with a word like SNORT or CLOTH that tests five new, common letters. Our guide to the best second word in Wordle lists the best follow-up for each popular opener.
  2. Use AUDIO if you want the O. ADIEU skips O, and AUDIO skips E. E is the more common vowel in answers, so ADIEU is usually the better pick. But if you already know E is in the word, AUDIO is a handy way to check the rest.
  3. Don’t keep hunting vowels. Once you have found one or two vowels, the answer probably has no more. Spend the next guess on consonants.
  4. Remember Y. If A, E, I, O and U all come back grey, the answer is one of the rare words like CRYPT, LYMPH or NYMPH that uses Y instead. See all 5 letter words with no vowels.
  5. Watch out for repeated vowels. Words like GEESE, EERIE and QUEUE use the same vowel more than once. If you have one E and the list still looks long, a double E could be the reason. Our guide to repeated letters in Wordle explains how Wordle colours them.

Find vowel words with our solver

You can search for vowel-heavy words with the Pattern mode of our 5 letter word finder. Type ? for each unknown letter. For example, A?I?E finds words like ABIDE, ALIKE, ALIVE and ASIDE. Or use the Wordle solver: put the vowels you know in the green and yellow boxes, type your grey letters, and the list shows only words that still fit.

If you’d rather browse, try 5 letter words ending with E (many answers end in a silent E) or 5 letter words starting with A.

Frequently asked questions

What 5 letter word has the most vowels?

Four is the most vowels a common five-letter word can have. Among likely Wordle answers, ADIEU, AUDIO, EERIE and QUEUE all have four. ADIEU and AUDIO are the most useful because they test four different vowels.

Is there a 5 letter word with all 5 vowels?

No common English word of five letters uses A, E, I, O and U. You need longer words, such as SEQUOIA or EDUCATION, to get all five.

Is ADIEU a good Wordle starting word?

It is good at finding vowels, but it tests only one consonant. Balanced openers like SLATE, CRANE or ARISE usually reveal more of the answer. If you like ADIEU, follow it with a consonant-heavy second guess.

How many Wordle answers have 3 vowels?

In our list of likely answers, 187 words (about 9%) have three vowels and 4 have four. More than 90% have one or two.

All counts in this guide come from our own word list. “Likely answers” are the common five-letter words most likely to be chosen as Wordle answers, as marked in our solver.
