5WordLetters is a free 5 letter word finder and Wordle solver. Type the letters you know and it searches all 8,636 five-letter words in our list, from everyday words to rare Scrabble plays. It works for Wordle, crosswords, Scrabble, Words With Friends and any other game where you need a word with five letters. It also handles 3, 4, 6 and 7 letter words.
How to use the 5 letter word finder
There are two ways to search, and both update the results panel above.
- Quick search: choose a length, pick Starting with, Ending with or Containing, type your letters and press Search. If we have a ready-made list for that search, such as 5 letter words starting with S, you go straight to it.
- Wordle solver: put each letter in the right spot into its green box. Put letters that are in the word but in the wrong spot into the yellow box for the position where you tried them. Type letters that are not in the word into the grey field, then press Find words (or Enter).
The quick search has two more modes. Pattern finds words that fit a shape: type ? for each unknown letter, such as S?A?E. Unscramble finds every word you can make from a set of letters.

A worked example
Say your first Wordle guess is SLATE, and the game shows S, L and T in grey, A in yellow and E in green. Type E into the fifth green box, A into the third yellow box (where you played it), and S, L, T into the grey field. Press Find words and the list drops from thousands of words to under a hundred, with likely answers such as ABODE, BADGE, DANCE and RANGE highlighted. Play one of the highlighted words, add the new clues, and repeat.

How repeated letters work
Repeated letters are the most common reason a Wordle solver gives the wrong answer. Words like LEVEL, GEESE and ALLOW use the same letter more than once, and Wordle colours each copy separately:
- If the answer has one E and you guess two, one E is coloured and the other turns grey.
- If the answer has two E’s and you guess two, both are coloured.

Our solver follows the same rules. A green or yellow letter means at least one copy. If you also type that letter in the grey field, we read it the way Wordle means it: the word has exactly as many copies as you have green and yellow tiles for it. You can also open Repeated letters in the solver to show only words with five different letters (best for early guesses) or only words that repeat a letter.
Best 5 letter words to start Wordle
A good first guess tests the letters that appear most often in five-letter answers. We counted how often each letter appears in the 2,120 common words in our list that are most likely to be Wordle answers:
Using those numbers, the strongest openers are words with five different, high-frequency letters. From our list, the top picks are:
Classic openers such as SLATE, CRANE and TRACE score well for the same reason. Vowel-heavy words like ADIEU and AUDIO reveal vowels quickly but test fewer common consonants. For a full breakdown, see our guide to the best Wordle starting words and the list of 5 letter words with no repeating letters.
Tips for solving Wordle faster
- Test new letters on guess two. Unless you already have three or more greens, a second guess made of five new letters usually removes more words than one that reuses your yellows.
- Move yellows. A yellow letter can never go back in the same position, so try it somewhere new.
- Watch common endings. Many answers end in E, Y, ER or CH. Lists like 5 letter words ending with E and 5 letter words ending with Y are good places to look.
- Remember Y. If every vowel is grey, the answer probably uses Y, as in the 5 letter words with no vowels.
- Pick the word that splits the list. With a handful of options left, guess the word whose letters rule out the most others, even if it cannot be the answer.
5 letter words for Scrabble and other games
Switch on Scrabble values in the results bar to see each word’s face-value score, and sort by score to put the best plays first. High-value letters make a big difference: Q and Z are worth 10 points, J and X are worth 8. The same word list works for Words With Friends, Boggle, crosswords and word-guessing games such as Dordle, Quordle and other Wordle alternatives. Need inspiration instead? About our word list
Our words come from ENABLE, a public-domain word list widely used by word games. It contains 8,636 five-letter words (list updated September 26, 2026). We mark 3,155 of them as common English words based on how often they appear in everyday language, and highlight the 2,120 that are most likely to be Wordle answers (common words that are not simple plurals or past-tense forms). Every other word is still valid in most word games, so you will find rare plays too.
Frequently asked questions
How many 5 letter words are there?
Our list has 8,636 five-letter words. About 3,155 of them are common English words, and 2,120 are the kind of words Wordle uses as answers. Bigger dictionaries include more rare and technical words, which is why different sources give different totals.
What is the best 5 letter word to start Wordle?
Words with five different common letters work best. Based on letter frequency in our list, AROSE, ALERT and ATONE are among the strongest openers. SLATE, CRANE and TRACE are popular choices for the same reason.
How does the Wordle solver handle repeated letters?
A green or yellow letter means the word has at least one copy of it. If Wordle also turned another copy of that letter grey, type it in the grey field too, and the solver shows only words with exactly that many copies.
Can I use this word finder for Scrabble?
Yes. Every word comes from a word-game dictionary. Switch on Scrabble values to see each word’s score and sort by score to find the highest-value play.
