Wordle Traps: How to Escape _IGHT, _OUND and _ATCH

Wordle traps: LIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT with four green letters

It is one of the most frustrating moments in Wordle. Your second guess comes back with four green tiles. You’re one letter away. Then you guess LIGHT, and it’s wrong. You try NIGHT, and that’s wrong too. Suddenly you’re on guess six and still haven’t solved it. This is a Wordle trap, and it beats far more players than hard words do.

What is a Wordle trap?

A trap is a pattern that fits many common words, usually because they share four letters and differ in just one. Once you’ve found the shared letters, each guess can rule out only one word. If there are more possible answers than guesses left, you’re relying on luck.

We checked our list of the 2,120 words most likely to be Wordle answers to see how big the worst traps are:

Wordle trap patterns: _IGHT, _OUND, _ATCH and _ _AKE each have 7 or 8 possible answers

The most common Wordle traps

PatternLikely answersWords
_IGHT8EIGHT, FIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT
_OUND8BOUND, FOUND, HOUND, MOUND, POUND, ROUND, SOUND, WOUND
__AKE8AWAKE, BRAKE, DRAKE, FLAKE, QUAKE, SHAKE, SNAKE, STAKE
_ATCH7BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH, PATCH, WATCH
_OWER6BOWER, COWER, LOWER, MOWER, POWER, TOWER
_ASTE5CASTE, HASTE, PASTE, TASTE, WASTE

Other patterns to watch for include words ending in -ING (BRING, CLING, SLING, STING, SWING, THING and more), words starting with SHA (SHADE, SHAKE, SHAME, SHAPE, SHARE, SHARK, SHARP, SHAVE and others), and double-letter endings like -ILLY and -OLLY. Each one leaves a long list of words that differ by just one or two letters.

Why guessing one word at a time fails

Say your second guess reveals _IGHT. You have four guesses left and eight possible answers. If you guess the words one by one, each guess checks just one answer. Four guesses cover four of the eight words, so you have about a 50% chance of losing your streak, however good your first two guesses were.

The fix is to stop guessing words that could be the answer, and guess a word that tests several missing letters at once.

The escape: one guess that tests many letters

Look at the first letters of the eight _IGHT words: E, F, L, M, N, R, S and T. Now find a word that uses as many of them as possible. SMELT uses five: S, M, E, L and T.

Play SMELT as your third guess and one of two things happens:

  • One of those letters turns yellow or green. You now know the first letter, so guess four solves it. (A yellow M means MIGHT, a yellow E means EIGHT, and so on.)
  • All five come back grey. Only FIGHT, NIGHT and RIGHT are left, and you have three guesses for three words.

Either way, you’re guaranteed to solve it. You gave up one guess that couldn’t win, and in return you removed all the luck. This kind of guess is often called a “burner” guess.

Burner words for each trap

These words each test four or five of the possible first letters for a trap, using only common words from our list:

TrapBurner wordWhat it testsIf all grey, still possible
_IGHTSMELTS, M, E, L, TFIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT
_OUNDFRESHF, R, S, HBOUND, MOUND, POUND, WOUND
_ATCHCHAMPC, H, M, PBATCH, LATCH, WATCH
_OWERBLIMPB, L, M, PCOWER, TOWER
_ASTEWITCHW, T, C, HPASTE

You don’t need to memorise these. The idea works for any trap: list the letters that could fill the gap, then find one word that contains as many of them as possible. Our 5 letter word finder can help. Type the letters into the Unscramble mode to see which real words you can make from them.

A note on Hard mode

In Hard mode, every guess must use the green and yellow letters you’ve already found. That rules out burner words like SMELT, which is why traps are so much more dangerous in Hard mode. There, your best defence is avoiding the trap early. Choose openers and second guesses that test many common consonants, so that by the time you find _IGHT you already know which first letters are grey. Our guide to Wordle Hard mode covers this in more detail.

How to spot a trap before you fall into it

  1. Check the list early. As soon as you have three or four greens, enter your clues into the solver. If six or more words still fit, you’re in a trap. Don’t just guess the first word that comes to mind.
  2. Use Pattern search. Type the known letters with ? for the gaps, such as ?IGHT, to see every word that fits the shape in one list.
  3. Count your guesses. If there are more possible words than guesses left, play a burner. If there are fewer, just guess the most likely word.
  4. Test common consonants early. Second guesses that test new, common letters make traps much less likely. See the best second word in Wordle for each popular opener.

Frequently asked questions

What is the hardest Wordle trap?

_IGHT and _OUND are two of the worst, with eight likely answers each. __AKE also has eight, but because two letters are missing, a burner word can usually narrow it down quickly.

Should I guess a word I know is wrong?

Yes, when you’re in a trap and have more possible answers than guesses left. A burner word can’t win that turn, but it can make the next guess certain. In normal mode this is the most reliable way to protect your streak.

Can I use burner words in Hard mode?

No. Hard mode makes you reuse every green and yellow letter, so burner words aren’t allowed. Avoid traps early by testing many common consonants in your first two guesses.
