4 Letter Wordle: Best Starting Words, Traps and a Free Solver

4 letter Wordle: TALE, IRON and MUSH solve HAIL

Four-letter Wordle sounds like the easy version. Fewer letters, fewer possible answers, quicker games. But players who switch from five letters often find the opposite: more failed games and more lost streaks. We analysed every four-letter word in our list to find out why, and what to do about it.

Why 4 letter Wordle is harder than it looks

Our list has 3,903 valid four-letter words. Of those, 1,764 are common words that are most likely to be chosen as answers. That’s fewer than in five-letter Wordle, but two things make the game harder:

  • Each guess tests fewer letters. Even the best four-letter opener finds only about 1.2 of the answer’s letters on average, and one answer in five shares no letters with it at all. In five-letter Wordle, a strong opener almost always finds something.
  • Traps are everywhere. Short words often differ by a single letter. BEAR, DEAR, FEAR, GEAR, HEAR, NEAR, PEAR, TEAR, WEAR and YEAR all end in -EAR. Find those three letters and you can still run out of guesses.

The most common letters in 4 letter words

Here’s how many likely answers contain each of the most common letters:

LetterShare of answersLetterShare of answers
A37%T22%
E35%I22%
O28%N20%
L25%S19%
R23%U15%

Two things stand out. First, A beats E, unlike in longer words. Second, S is much weaker than you’d expect: only 2% of likely answers end in S, because plurals such as CATS and DOGS are rarely used as answers. Don’t waste the last box on an S.

Most answers have one vowel (52%) or two (46%). Only about one answer in five repeats a letter, as in BALL, TOOL or SEEN.

Best 4 letter Wordle starting words

A good opener uses four different letters from the top of the table. The highest-scoring words in our list are:

  1. TALE (also LATE and TEAL): tests A, E, L and T.
  2. REAL (also EARL): swaps T for R and scores the same.
  3. RATE, TEAR and LANE: close behind.

Popular picks such as STAR and ROSE do worse. STAR shares no letters with almost 29% of answers. It tests only one vowel, and it spends a slot on S, which is weak in four-letter answers.

The 3-word plan that never leaves you blank

Because one opener misses so often, four-letter Wordle rewards a short plan. Use three guesses that together test 12 different common letters:

  1. TALE: A, E, L, T
  2. IRON: I, R, O, N
  3. MUSH: M, U, S, H

After TALE and IRON, only 2% of answers have no letters found. Add MUSH and every likely answer has at least one letter found, while 62% have three or more. With three guesses left, that’s usually enough to finish.

You don’t have to play all three every time. If TALE gives you two or more coloured letters, skip straight to solving. This plan is for normal mode only. Hard mode makes you reuse the letters you’ve found.

A sample game: finding HAIL

  • TALE: A turns green, L turns yellow, and T and E are grey. 37 likely answers still fit.
  • IRON: I turns yellow, and R, O and N are grey. Now 10 words fit, almost all ending in -AIL: BAIL, FAIL, HAIL, MAIL, PAIL, SAIL, WAIL and a few more.
  • MUSH: H turns yellow and the rest are grey. Only HAIL is left.
  • Guess 4: HAIL. Solved.

Notice what happened at step two: the -AIL trap. Guessing BAIL, then FAIL, then HAIL could easily have taken all your remaining guesses. MUSH checked three of the possible first letters at once, M, S and H, and solved it.

The biggest 4 letter Wordle traps

These patterns hide the most common words in our list:

_AIL12BAIL, FAIL, HAIL, MAIL, NAIL, PAIL, RAIL, SAIL, TAIL
_ILL12BILL, FILL, HILL, KILL, MILL, PILL, TILL, WILL

_INK10LINK, MINK, PINK, RINK, SINK, WINK
_ASH10BASH, CASH, DASH, HASH, MASH, RASH, WASH

When you land in one of these with several guesses left, don’t guess one word at a time. Play a word that tests as many of the possible first letters as you can. For _EAR, WHIP tests W, H and P, and BOND tests B, N and D. Two guesses check six of the possible first letters, instead of two. Our guide to Wordle traps explains this “burner word” trick in detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best word to start 4 letter Wordle?

TALE, or its anagrams LATE and TEAL. They test A, E, L and T, four of the most common letters in four-letter answers. REAL and EARL score almost exactly the same.

Is 4 letter Wordle easier than 5 letter Wordle?

Not usually. Each guess tests fewer letters, one answer in five shares no letters with the best opener, and big traps like -EAR and -AIL leave many words that differ by one letter.

How many 4 letter words are there?

Our list has 3,903 valid four-letter words. About 1,764 are common words likely to be used as answers in word games.

Where can I play 4 letter Wordle?

The official New York Times Wordle uses five letters, but many Wordle-style and “unlimited” games let you choose four. The tips and the solver in this guide work for all of them.

All figures in this guide come from our own word list. “Likely answers” are the common four-letter words most likely to be chosen as answers, as marked in our solver.
