Hard 5 Letter Words for Wordle: The 15 Toughest Answers (and How to Beat Them)

Hard 5 Letter Words for Wordle

Some days Wordle falls in three guesses. Other days you have four green letters on guess three and still lose your streak. The difference is usually not your skill but the word itself.

Some five-letter words are simply much harder to solve than others. We analysed all 2,120 words in our list that are most likely to be Wordle answers to find out which ones, and why.

What makes a 5 letter word hard in Wordle?

Rare or long-forgotten words aren’t the problem, because Wordle almost always picks familiar answers. Instead, four things make a word hard:

what makes a Wordle word hard
what makes a Wordle word hard
  1. Lookalikes. Words that differ from other answers by a single letter. You can find four letters and still face a long list of options.
  2. Repeated letters. A third of all answers (33%) use a letter more than once, and players rarely guess the same letter twice.
  3. Rare letters. J, Q, X, Z, K and V are seldom tested in early guesses, so words that use them stay hidden longer.
  4. No vowels. A handful of answers have no A, E, I, O or U at all, and lean on Y instead.

1. Lookalike words: the biggest streak killers

For every likely answer, we counted how many other likely answers differ from it by exactly one letter in one position. On average, an answer has about two lookalikes. But some have far more:

WordLookalikesExamples
SHARE15SCARE, SHADE, SHAKE, SHAME, SHAPE, SHORE, SNARE, SPARE, STARE
STORE12SCORE, SHORE, SNORE, STARE, STOKE, STONE, STORM, STOVE
STARE11SCARE, SHARE, SNARE, SPARE, STAGE, STAKE, STALE, START, STATE
SHORE10CHORE, SCORE, SHARE, SHONE, SHORT, SNORE, STORE
LATER10CATER, EATER, HATER, LASER, LAYER, WATER

Then there are whole families of words with the same four letters, where only the first letter changes. The two biggest each have eight likely answers: _IGHT (EIGHT, FIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT) and _OUND (BOUND, FOUND, HOUND, MOUND, POUND, ROUND, SOUND, WOUND). Find _IGHT on guess two, guess one candidate at a time, and you have about a 50% chance of losing. Our guide to Wordle traps shows the “burner word” trick that turns that into a guaranteed win.

2. Repeated letters

Most players instinctively guess words with five different letters, so answers that repeat a letter catch them out. One in three likely answers repeats a letter, and 25 use the same letter three times, including GEESE, EERIE, ERROR, FLUFF, PUPPY, POPPY, NANNY and MUMMY.

Others use two letters twice each, like LEVEL, KAYAK, RADAR, TEETH, VIVID and QUEUE. These are especially tough, because there are only three different letters to find. Wordle colours repeated letters in a way that’s easy to misread. Our guide to repeated letters in Wordle explains exactly how it works.

3. Rare letters

Common openers test letters like E, A, R, T and S, so answers built from rare letters can go several guesses with almost nothing turning green. Measured by how uncommon their letters are, the hardest likely answers are JUMPY, JUMBO, BUMPY, QUICK, FUNKY, KLUTZ, GIZMO and UNZIP. Only one Wordle answer in 18 uses Q, J, X or Z at all. See where each one usually sits in our guide to rare letters in Wordle.

4. Words with no vowels

Only nine likely answers have none of A, E, I, O or U: CRYPT, LYMPH, LYNCH, NYMPH, PSYCH, PYGMY, SYNCH, SYNTH and TRYST. They all use Y in place of a vowel. If your first two guesses turn every vowel grey, stop hunting vowels and test Y. The full list is on our page of 5 letter words with no vowels.

The 15 hardest Wordle words

Combining all four measures, these are the likely answers we’d least like to see on a busy morning:

#WordWhy it’s hard
1SHARE15 lookalikes, the most of any answer
2STORE12 lookalikes
3STARE11 lookalikes
4MOUNDOne of 8 _OUND words
5NIGHTOne of 8 _IGHT words
6SHORE10 lookalikes
7GEESEThree E’s
8EERIEThree E’s and only three different letters
9PUPPYThree P’s
10ERRORThree R’s
11QUEUETwo U’s, two E’s and a Q
12NYMPHNo vowels
13PSYCHNo vowels and an unusual spelling
14JUMPYThe rarest mix of letters in our list
15KLUTZK and Z, with only one vowel

The good news: about 26% of likely answers have no lookalikes at all. Once you’ve found their letters, there’s only one word they can be.

How to beat hard Wordle words

  1. Count before you guess. When you have three or four greens, check how many words still fit. If there are more options than guesses left, don’t guess them one by one.
  2. Use a burner word. Play a word that tests several of the missing letters at once, even if it can’t be the answer. For _IGHT, SMELT tests S, M, E, L and T together.
  3. Consider a repeat when you’re stuck. If no word with five different letters fits your clues, try a word that repeats one you’ve already found.
  4. Bring in rare letters later. Don’t test J or Q early, but once the common letters are grey, they become much more likely.
  5. Test Y when vowels fail. Two guesses with no coloured vowels point strongly to a Y word.
  6. Let the solver count for you. Our 5 letter word finder takes green, yellow and grey letters, handles repeated letters correctly and highlights the likely answers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the hardest Wordle word?

By our measure, SHARE. Fifteen other likely answers differ from it by just one letter, including SPARE, STARE, SHAPE, SHORE and SNARE. That’s more than any other answer, so even four green letters can leave you guessing.

What 5 letter words have three of the same letter?

Among likely Wordle answers, 25 words use one letter three times, such as GEESE, EERIE, ERROR, FLUFF, PUPPY, POPPY, NANNY, MUMMY and DADDY.

Are Wordle words getting harder?

Wordle answers are chosen from a fixed list of familiar words, and difficulty varies from day to day. Some days bring an easy word with few lookalikes, others a trap like _IGHT or a word with repeated letters. The tips above work whichever kind you get.

What is a hard word to start Wordle with?

Starting with a hard word is a mistake. Openers should test common letters, such as SLATE or CRANE. Words like JUMPY or FUZZY test rare letters that most answers don’t use.

All figures come from our own word list. “Likely answers” are the common five-letter words most likely to be chosen as Wordle answers, as marked in our solver.
