Anagram Solver

Type the letters you have and our free anagram solver shows every word you can make from them, from 2 to 8 letters. Words that use all your letters come first, then shorter words. Add a ? for a blank tile.

How to use the anagram solver

  1. Type your letters in any order, up to 15. For example LISTEN, or the seven tiles on your Scrabble rack.
  2. Add blanks with a question mark. TISANE? finds every 7-letter word you can make from T, I, S, A, N, E and any one extra letter.
  3. Press Unscramble. Results are grouped by length, longest first. A group marked “uses all your letters” holds the exact anagrams.
  4. Narrow it down with More options: words that start with, end with or contain certain letters, and the shortest word length to show.

Common English words are highlighted, and every word shows its Scrabble score. Letters played with a blank score zero. You can switch between “best first” and A–Z sorting at any time, and copy the page address to share your search.

What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word made by rearranging all the letters of another word, using each letter exactly once. Some well-known examples:

  • LISTEN → SILENT, ENLIST, TINSEL, INLETS
  • EARTH → HEART, HATER
  • STOP → POST, POTS, SPOT, TOPS, OPTS
  • ELBOW → BELOW, BOWEL
  • EVIL → LIVE, VEIL, VILE
  • NIGHT → THING
  • PLAYERS → PARSLEY, REPLAYS, SPARELY, PARLEYS

Click any example to run it in the solver. A word unscrambler goes one step further and also lists shorter words you can make from some of the letters, which is exactly what you need for Scrabble, Words With Friends and word-jumble puzzles. This tool does both.

Anagrams in Scrabble and Words With Friends

In Scrabble, playing all seven of your tiles in one turn earns a 50-point bonus, called a bingo. Finding a bingo usually means finding an anagram of your whole rack. Some letter sets are famous for making many words:

  • A E I N R S T makes nine different 7-letter words, including RETAINS, NASTIER, STAINER and RETINAS, more than any other set in our list.
  • A E I L R S T makes REALIST, SALTIER, RETAILS and three more.
  • A E I N S T + a blank makes a 7-letter word with any extra letter except J, Q or Y.

When you can’t use all seven tiles, sort by score to find the highest-scoring shorter play. For a deeper guide, see 7 letter words with these letters and a blank.

Tips for solving anagrams yourself

  • Look for common endings. Pull out -ING, -ED, -ER, -LY or -EST and rearrange what’s left.
  • Try common starts. Many words begin with RE-, UN-, ST-, CH- or TH-.
  • Pair vowels and consonants. Alternating a consonant and a vowel often reveals a word, as in DUSTY → STUDY.
  • Shuffle. Writing the letters in a circle, or in a new order, often helps you see a word you missed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an anagram solver and a word unscrambler?

An anagram uses all of the letters exactly once, so an anagram solver finds rearrangements of the whole word. A word unscrambler also finds shorter words made from some of the letters. Our tool shows both: exact anagrams first, then every shorter word.

How do I use a blank tile?

Type a question mark (?) for each blank, up to two. The solver tries every letter in that spot. In Scrabble scoring, a letter played with a blank is worth 0 points, and the scores shown take that into account.

Why did my letters return nothing?

Check the filters under More options. A “starts with” or “contains” filter, or a high shortest-word setting, can hide results. Also make sure you typed letters only, with ? for blanks.

How long can a word be?

You can type up to 15 letters, and the solver finds words from 2 to 8 letters long. That covers bingos in Scrabble, plus most word-game and puzzle answers.

Which dictionary do you use?

Our results come from the public-domain ENABLE word list, which is very close to the dictionaries used for Scrabble in North America and for Words With Friends. A few rare words may differ between games.
